Sexual Relationships: A Sensitive but Unavoidable Topic in the Journey to Adulthood

One question that many young people are often curious about is: What age is considered “normal” to start having sex? The answer is not simple, nor is there a fixed “standard.” Let’s explore this topic in more

There Is No “Normal” Age for Sexual Relationships

First and foremost, it’s essential to recognize that there is no “normal” age that everyone must follow when deciding to begin sexual activity. This decision depends on many factors: family values, religion, culture, and one’s psychological and physical readiness. Each person has their own journey and timing; no one else can decide for you.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Having Sex

Before you feel ready, consider asking yourself these critical questions:

  • Am I psychologically prepared?

  • Do I fully understand safe practices, contraception, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

  • Am I aware of the responsibilities and consequences if an unplanned pregnancy or infection occurs?

  • Is my relationship strong and trustworthy enough to share this experience?

What Does the Law Say About the Age for Sexual Relationships?

In Vietnam, by law, individuals aged 16 and older can legally consent to sexual activity. However, this does not mean that 16 is the “best” age to start; it simply indicates that at this age, the law recognizes that you have sufficient awareness and responsibility for your actions. Anyone under 16 is still considered a child, and any sexual activity with someone under this age is against the law.

What Age Do Experts Recommend?

Many reproductive health experts recommend waiting until at least age 20 for men and 18 for women. By this age, the body and mind are generally more mature, and individuals are more capable of understanding and taking responsibility for their actions.

Additionally, people at this age are likely to have adequate knowledge about reproductive health and safe sex practices, which helps protect themselves and their partners from risks like unplanned pregnancies and STIs.

Why Are Young People Engaging in Sex Earlier?

Today’s youth are more likely to engage in sex earlier, partly due to early exposure to social media, adult content, and various cultural and societal influences. In a modern environment, access to information and sexual images is easier than ever, leading to curiosity and a desire to explore at a younger age.

Sex Education – The Key to Smart Choices for Young People

In this context, early sex education is essential. Basic knowledge about reproductive health, safe sex, and contraception not only helps young people protect themselves but also reduces the burden on families and society from unintended consequences.

Conclusion: Your Choice, Your Responsibility

There is no right or wrong answer to the question, “What age is normal to start having sex?” This decision is yours and should be based on understanding, as well as physical and emotional readiness. Don’t let peer or societal pressure influence your choice. Most importantly, remember that while sex can be part of a relationship, it’s not everything. What matters is mutual understanding, respect, and responsibility for yourself and your partner.
